Getting Straight to the Point – Ten Invisalign Truths You Should Know Before You Buy

Okay, so the chances are you’re reading this post because your smile is not something you’re proud of…

Be it crooked teeth, gapped teeth, or an overbite, Invisalign braces are definitely a great choice. However before you rush into this type of orthodontic treatment it pays to get some important facts straight. Here are a few things we thought you might like to know before your Invisalign appointment:

  1. You do have to wear them

Despite the fact that Invisalign aligners are removable, you must wear your aligners for approximately 22 hours a day in order to get the best results – Sorry but there’s absolutely no way around it!

  1. You might not be able to see them, but you can hear them

While no one can see that you’re wearing invisible braces – they might just be able to hear that you are. But don’t worry, this is totally normal and any lisps caused by Invisalign will generally go away within a few weeks.

  1. Invisalign isn’t for everyone

Invisalign is great for the majority of orthodontic issues, such as minor over/under bites, crooked, or gapped teeth but do bear in mind that it’s not ideal in complex cases.

  1. Your toothbrush will become your new best friend

Every time you eat, you need to brush your teeth before putting the aligner back into your mouth. This is so that whatever you’ve just enjoyed isn’t nicely showcased in your clear aligner. In your efforts to keep up appearances, we’re sure that a discreet travel toothbrush and toothpaste will become your new essentials whilst you’re out and about.

  1. Weight loss is a bonus side effect

Who’d have thought that while gaining a gorgeous smile you’ll also shake off some unwanted pounds? When you’re forced to remove your aligners and brush your teeth after every meal or snack, it certainly makes you think twice about what you’re unnecessarily stuffing in your mouth come those 2pm cravings…is it really worth the hassle?

  1. Treatment might take longer than you think

Invisalign treatment can be quicker than other treatments and what’s more you’ll find out exactly how long you’ll need to wear them for. But hold on…you want perfection right? Well often after your last aligner, be aware that you may need a few more extra little tweaks here and there to achieve it.

  1. It’s (almost) painless

Compared to sore teeth after having metal braces tightened, Invisalign is a breeze. However you may notice mild pressure on your teeth. The good news is that it causes very little discomfort which soon fades.

  1. You need to clean the aligners

Since you’ll be wearing your aligners all day for 14 days, it’s likely that they’ll lose their clear look. This is why they need cleaning. However don’t use toothpaste to clean them, it’s way too abrasive. Instead stick to a clear anti-bacterial soap or a quick soak in Retainer Brite.

  1. You still need to wear a retainer

But thankfully only at night time and you can always talk to us about having a fixed retainer instead. This is attached to the back of your teeth and can reduce the inconvenience factor.

  1. It’s definitely worth it

Aside from all the regular brushing and the occasional embarrassment of removing aligners in public, a little bit of sacrifice is a small price to pay for the confidence you’ll gain from having beautifully straight teeth –  For this reason alone, we believe that Invisalign is definitely worth it!
